Heeeeeyyyyy people,

If you have a vote in the SU, can I urge you to go use it to vote the lovely Clare for the WAC post in this election. It's very important that she gets it, this year is going to be tough for student welfare and we need someone with as much passion and experience as Clare has to give. Remember the part where she was given an honorary lifetime membership of Pride right after being President for one year? :D

Here's her frankly awesome manifesto:

http://www.warwicksu.com/elections/manifesto/4805/

(excited about the mental health outreach, watch this space!)

And here's where you can vote:

http://www.warwicksu.com/elections/

It will only take a couple of minuteesssssss...

As part of our fledgling trans awareness media campaign, a rep from INC films and myself are looking for recruits. Our first project is a short film. We need people and ideas.

From our point of view we'd like to do something more creative than a documentary, maybe something comic or even scary. Something a bit more aggressive than the 'can't everyone just get along?' stuff which tends to just washes over people. A musical could be a lot of fun...

We're starting on this in the first half of this term, because its the only time the two of us are free before exams. I understand that could be difficult for others, but if anyone has any time to spare, please give it to us.

LGBT Literature

There’s probably a thread on this already, squirreled away somewhere, but I wondered what the favourite LGBT themed books/writers are on here? And if any of these have a personal stories attached to them? I think literature is one of those mediums that can be particularly impacting for those who are feeling marginalised whether they are closeted, or getting to grips with their identity.

While I was closeted, I would have been too scared to have owned or be caught looking at a book that dealt with gay themes. I wish I hadn’t been. But, one of the things that I started doing after coming out, being the literature geek that I am, was look up as many books as I could. Virtually, the day after I bought and read E.M. Forster’s Maurice which is probably one of the most important ‘gay’ novels that I’ve read. One of the most important generally, in fact. It was written in about 1913-4, but wasn’t released until 1971 after his death the year before. I suppose I was attracted to it because Forster is such a significant name in literature anyway. Even though it had been written, well nigh on a century ago, I found plenty to identify with and read it virtually in one sitting. There is something about the way in which the material is dealt, i.e. in a typical period manner, albeit with Forster’s characteristic style, which was particularly comforting. It kind of struck home, (the slightly obvious, but important point) how at the very least people who experience homosexual feelings have existed in various times and cultures.

So, what are your favourite LGBT novels? And what effect did they have on you/how did you find them?
